What is Artex?

Back in the 1970’s Artex was used in British homes to give ceilings a textured finish, therefore enabling it to be finished without plastering skills. It was occasionally used in walls too. Artex was used in almost every building and it was very popular at that time, mainly with the familiar stippled and swirly patterns.

Why cover Artex?

One of the main reasons people want to cover Artex is because textured wall and ceiling coverings are no longer a popular interior design trend. Artex will make a home look outdated even if its decorations are new. Nowadays, most people like smooth plastered walls and ceilings or simple wallpaper.

Some people associate textured walls and ceilings with asbestos and poisoning, this was true before the 2000’s when Artex was made with white asbestos to strengthen it. That is why it’s important to know when it was made, this way you can either remove it (if it was after the year 2000) or cover it (if it was before the year 2000). Though removal of Artex can be rather difficult. That is why most people prefer to cover it.
